The host nation was Qatar, and FIFA describes it as the first men's World Cup held in the Arab world. This is a record about the hosting region; it does not make any of the other regions a first-time host.

Argentina won in 1978, 1986 and 2022, with Qatar their third title. The other options each replace either 1978 or 1986 with a different year.

The match finished 3-3 after extra time and Argentina won the shoot-out 4-2. The 4-2 is a separate record deciding the winner and is not added to the official score to make it 4-2 or 7-5.

Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot and Di María added a second, so the first half ended 2-0 to Argentina. Álvarez was not among the first-half scorers, and Mbappé's goals came late in the second half.

Mbappé converted a penalty in the 80th minute and volleyed in from open play in the 81st to make it 2-2. Both were not penalties, and the two goals were not shared between Giroud or Griezmann and him.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez saved Coman's kick, and Gonzalo Montiel converted Argentina's fourth to win the title. Di María scored during the match but did not take one of the decisive penalties.

Lionel Messi took the Golden Ball, and Kylian Mbappé the Golden Boot as top scorer with eight goals. Martínez won the Golden Glove and Fernández the Young Player Award.

Morocco beat Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-final to become the first African side in a semi-final. Spain came in the round of 16, won on penalties; France was the semi-final; Croatia the third-place match — all different rounds.

Japan beat both Germany and Spain and topped Group E. In each of the other options at least one of the two results, or the final position, fails to match FIFA's records.
