What kind of exam is it?

The Fundamental Information Technology Engineer Examination (FE) is a national exam within Japan's Information Technology Engineers Examination system. Beyond technical knowledge such as algorithms, programming, networks and databases, it reaches into management and strategy as well, testing a broad foundation across IT. It suits people starting out in IT and anyone who wants to organize their knowledge systematically.

Format and how often it is held

As a rule it uses a CBT (computer-based testing) format available year-round. Questions are mainly multiple choice, split between a section testing knowledge and a section testing more practical reasoning ability. That makes it easy to pick a date that suits you.

What passing gets you

It proves you have a systematic grounding in IT fundamentals, which is valued when job hunting or changing careers. It also gives you a basis for communicating at work and a stepping stone toward more specialized higher-level qualifications.

How to prepare
