Kiba turns Ukon's shared-body ability against him: by stabbing himself, he also injures Ukon and forces him to separate. Because Kiba is badly hurt as well, he carries Akamaru into a river and uses the water to break their scent trail. He does not remove Ukon unharmed with medical ninjutsu.

Lee intends to take medicine but drinks Tsunade's sake that he brought by mistake. Because alcohol makes his movements stronger and harder to predict, he pressures Kimimaro with Drunken Fist. He does not deliberately take a drug to open the Eight Gates or acquire Kimimaro's kekkei genkai.

Temari reinforces Shikamaru against Tayuya, Kankuro reaches Kiba's fight with Sakon and Ukon, and Gaara protects Lee from Kimimaro. The three are not restarting the Konoha Crush; they are formal reinforcements requested from the Sand by Fifth Hokage Tsunade.

Gaara creates a much larger supply by crushing rocks and minerals beneath the ground into sand, which he uses for both attack and defense. Even so, Kimimaro in Curse Mark State 2 nearly lands a final strike; he dies from his illness immediately before piercing Gaara. Being cornered by the sand and the direct cause of death are therefore different facts.

Mastering the Great Fireball Jutsu marks a Uchiha as having come of age. Sasuke initially fails in front of his father, trains intensely, and succeeds, finally receiving his father's acknowledgment. Chidori is a later technique taught by Kakashi and is not the focus of this father-and-son memory.

Itachi tells the young Sasuke that the path to the Mangekyo Sharingan is to defeat his closest friend. Sasuke recognizes Naruto as that closest friend, making him the person whose bond Sasuke intends to sever. Itachi's stated condition is not the capture of the Nine-Tails.

To Naruto, Sasuke is a precious connection he has finally gained, and he intends to force Sasuke back if necessary. Sasuke seeks the power of revenge by cutting that connection. At the same time, putting on the forehead protector shows that Sasuke now accepts Naruto as someone worthy of facing him as an equal.

Sasuke first uses his strengthened Sharingan to read and dominate Naruto's movements. Naruto answers by drawing out the Nine-Tails chakra cloak, and the cornered Sasuke responds by entering Curse Mark State 2. Naruto is the one using the Nine-Tails, while Sasuke releases the Curse Mark; their roles cannot be reversed.

The final collision is between Naruto's Rasengan and Sasuke's Chidori. Naruto is left unconscious, while the injured Sasuke continues toward Orochimaru. Kakashi arrives too late to stop the duel and carries Naruto home, meaning the retrieval mission has not succeeded.

Shikamaru has minor injuries, Kiba is badly wounded but expected to live, and Choji and Neji remain in critical condition. Shikamaru initially concludes that his poor leadership endangered the squad and that he is unfit to be a ninja. His comrades and father help him turn that regret into renewed commitment, which he presents to Tsunade rather than resigning.
