Most of Egypt is in Africa, but the Sinai Peninsula east of the Isthmus of Suez belongs to Asia. It is the isthmus, not the Nile, that marks the division between the two continents.

The large island nation east of the Mozambique Channel is Madagascar. Mauritius and Seychelles are Indian Ocean island nations too, but neither lies across that channel from mainland Africa.

The Bering Strait, between the Russian Far East and Alaska, separates Asia from North America. The Strait of Magellan lies between mainland South America and Tierra del Fuego.

The sea enclosed by Central America, the northern coast of South America and the Greater and Lesser Antilles is the Caribbean. It connects to the Gulf of Mexico through the Yucatán Channel and elsewhere, but the two are not the same sea.

The one lying between those three bodies of water is the Arabian Peninsula. The Indochinese Peninsula lies between the South China Sea and the Bay of Bengal side and does not touch the Persian Gulf.

The region reaching from south of the Himalayas out into the Indian Ocean is called the Indian subcontinent. It is a geographic name for a unit defined by mountains and sea rather than by borders.

The main part of the Scandinavian Peninsula is occupied by Norway in the west and Sweden in the east. Denmark consists mainly of the Jutland Peninsula and islands and is not on the main part of this peninsula.

Only Lake Michigan lies wholly within the United States. The other four touch the border wholly or in part, so it is wrong to think of all the Great Lakes as border lakes.

Japan lies in the north-west Pacific off the eastern edge of the Eurasian continent. An island nation in the western Indian Ocean off East Africa would be something more like Madagascar.

The South Pole is on the continent of Antarctica, which is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. The North Pole is not on a continent but on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean, so the two poles are not built the same way.

Mainland Portugal is in the west of the Iberian Peninsula and its only land neighbour is Spain. Andorra is on the same peninsula, in the north-east, but borders France as well as Spain and has no coast.

The landlocked country between India and China with Kathmandu as its capital is Nepal. Bhutan borders the same two countries, but its capital is Thimphu, so the capital tells them apart.

Bangladesh is surrounded for the most part by India, has a coast on the Bay of Bengal to the south and borders Myanmar to the south-east. Nepal and Bhutan are landlocked and Sri Lanka is an island.

Chile runs long and narrow from north to south between the Pacific and the Andes. Peru is also a Pacific coast country, but its shape is not as long and narrow as Chile's and does not meet all the conditions.

Uruguay borders Brazil and Argentina and has a coast on the Atlantic side at the mouth of the Río de la Plata. Paraguay borders the same two countries but is landlocked, so it fails the coast condition.

Laos is the landlocked country of South-East Asia, with no coast. Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia all have coasts, so their circumstances in international logistics differ.

The one bordering four countries is Botswana. Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa alone, Eswatini borders South Africa and Mozambique, and Malawi borders Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique.

The western Pacific island nation east of Vietnam and south of Taiwan is the Philippines. Indonesia lies further south and the Maldives are in the Indian Ocean.

The large island nation lying between the two peninsulas near the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico is Cuba. Jamaica lies south of Cuba and the Bahamas to its north-east.

The island nation at these high latitudes in the North Atlantic is Iceland. Ireland is also on the North Atlantic side but lies further south-east and does not fit the condition of being near the Arctic Circle.
