Canada's capital is Ottawa, with Gatineau in Quebec on the opposite bank of the Ottawa River. Toronto is the capital of Ontario but not the federal capital.

The present capital, Brasília, was purpose-built in the interior of the country. Rio de Janeiro is the former capital and São Paulo the largest city, but neither is the political capital today.

Turkey's capital is Ankara, in the interior. Istanbul is famous as the largest city, straddling two continents, but it is not the capital.

Nigeria's capital is Abuja, in the centre of the country. Lagos is the former capital and remains a major city and port, but the seat of central government is Abuja.

Wellington is the capital, at the southern end of the North Island on Cook Strait. Auckland is a large North Island city but lies further north and is not the capital.

Kazakhstan's present capital is Astana. Almaty is the former capital, and Tashkent, Bishkek and Dushanbe are the capitals of other Central Asian countries.

Morocco's capital is Rabat, on the Atlantic coast. Casablanca is famous as the economic centre but is not the capital, and Marrakesh and Fez are historic cities.

The capital of the United Arab Emirates is Abu Dhabi. Dubai is the principal city of another of the emirates but is not the federal capital. Doha and Manama are the capitals of other Gulf states.

The present capital is Islamabad, inland in the north. Karachi is a great port city and the former capital, but the capital has moved.

Myanmar's capital is Naypyidaw. Yangon is the former capital and largest city and Mandalay another major city, but neither is the seat of central government today.

The capital, Hanoi, is in the Red River delta of northern Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City is a large city in the south but not the political capital.

The capital on the lower Chao Phraya is Bangkok. Chiang Mai is in the north and Phuket is an island in the south, so neither fits the river-mouth condition.

The capital, Cairo, is on the lower Nile near where the delta begins. Alexandria is on the Mediterranean coast, and Luxor and Aswan lie further upstream.

Baghdad is Iraq's capital, on the Tigris. Basra is a major city in the south and Mosul in the north, and Damascus is the capital of Syria.

Czechia's capital, Prague, stands on the Vltava. Bratislava is in Slovakia and Kraków in Poland, so neither meets the country condition either.

Warsaw is Poland's capital, on the Vistula. Gdańsk is a Baltic coast city near the mouth of the same river but is not the capital.

Lisbon is Portugal's capital, at the mouth of the Tagus. Porto is a major city at the mouth of the Douro, so the river is different.

Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital, on the western bank of the Río de la Plata. Montevideo, on the opposite side, is the capital of Uruguay, so do not confuse the countries.

Budapest is Hungary's capital, grown from Buda and Pest on either side of the Danube. Bucharest, similar in name, is the capital of Romania.

Addis Ababa is the inland capital, in the Ethiopian Highlands. Asmara, Djibouti and Khartoum are all capitals of neighbouring countries.
