Berlin is a city-state, both a city and a federal state, and is surrounded geographically by Brandenburg. Berlin is not Brandenburg's capital; it is a separate state.

Vienna is Austria's federal capital and at the same time one of the nine federal states, as well as a municipality. Treating it as a city within a surrounding state is wrong.

The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires is a separate administrative unit from Buenos Aires Province. Even in a continuous metropolitan area, crossing the city boundary can take you into the province of the same name.

Tokyo Metropolis consists of the 23 special wards, the Tama area and the islands, which include the Izu and Ogasawara Islands. Even where "Tokyo" is used loosely for the central area, the administrative metropolis is not just the 23 wards.

The Han crosses Seoul from east to west and divides the built-up area into a northern and a southern side. The name Gangnam itself comes from being south of the Han.

Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are all boroughs of New York City. Jersey City is a separate city in New Jersey, across the Hudson.

Arlington is in Virginia, facing Washington, D.C. across the Potomac. D.C. itself is not part of Maryland or any other state but a federal district.

Hong Kong is on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary and Macau on the western side. They are close together but are not on the same island or in the same territory; the estuary lies between them.

Port Jackson, Sydney's natural harbour, opens to the east onto the Pacific. Sydney is a city on Australia's east coast, so it is not on the Indian Ocean side.

The city centre faces Table Bay, with Table Mountain and its famous flat top rising behind. The Cape of Good Hope is in the south of the Cape Peninsula, not in the city centre itself.

Rio de Janeiro is on the western shore of Guanabara Bay and Niterói on the eastern side. Do not confuse this with the pair of cities on either side of the Río de la Plata.

Toronto is on the north-western shore of Lake Ontario, and south of the lake is New York State in the United States. The province and the lake share the name Ontario, but the far shore is not another Canadian province.

Chicago is on the south-western shore of Lake Michigan, and from the city centre the lake spreads mainly to the east. Among the Great Lakes, Erie and Ontario lie further east.

The river flowing out of the northern end of Lake Zurich is the Limmat, which runs through the old town. It joins the Rhine system, the largest in Switzerland, but the river leaving the lake itself is not the Rhine.

The Rhône flows into Lake Geneva from the east and out again at the south-western end where Geneva stands. After leaving the lake it runs through France to the Mediterranean.

Rotterdam lies in the delta of the Rhine and Meuse system and serves as the gateway to the North Sea. The other three are all Mediterranean ports.

The Thames flows broadly west to east through London and reaches the North Sea by way of the Thames Estuary. It meanders within the city, so a short stretch is no guide.

The right and left banks of a river are fixed by facing downstream. In central Paris the Right Bank is broadly to the north and the Left Bank to the south, and the Île de la Cité is an island in the river.

Vatican City is an independent sovereign state enclosed within Rome. It is not merely a district of Rome but a landlocked country with a border with Italy.

The centre is mainly on the eastern side of Zealand and the airport on neighbouring Amager. The eastern shore of the Øresund is Sweden, and the city is not on the Jutland Peninsula.
