Satan mistakes Cell's power for a trick and badly underestimates the danger. He stops Goku because he believes he can defeat Cell himself, not to protect an injured fighter or obey an order from Cell.

Pirozhki and Caroni challenge Cell before their teacher and are both handled effortlessly. Satan follows them and is likewise knocked away with ease. None of the three inflicts meaningful damage on Cell.

Despite the intensity of the opening exchange, neither fighter is yet using their full power. Goku eventually releases 100 percent, and Cell answers at full strength. Gohan enters only after Goku's battle ends.

Goku does not erase or reflect the attack. He changes the position of its intended target—himself—so Cell must aim upward rather than through Earth, redirecting the threat away from the planet.

Goku lets Cell believe he cannot safely fire downward, then teleports directly in front of him at the final instant. The attack lands at point-blank range; it is neither a long-distance exchange nor an attempt to win by ring-out.

Cell regenerates after losing his upper body and remains able to continue with power to spare. Goku, by contrast, shows the cost of sustained full-power combat and surrenders based on that gap—not because of a ring-out.

Goku believes Gohan's hidden strength can surpass Cell, so he selects his son as the next fighter. He gives the Senzu Bean to Cell so Gohan faces a fully restored opponent. The recipient and the chosen challenger are both crucial to the decision.

Gohan is not conceding defeat. He knows that anger can release power he struggles to control and does not want that power to kill Cell. Cell responds by trying to provoke precisely that anger.

Bulma removed Android 16's bomb while repairing him, so his attempted sacrifice cannot work. Cell then creates the Cell Juniors and has them brutalize Gohan's friends, trying to force Gohan's hidden anger to emerge.

Satan honors Android 16's request by carrying his head to Gohan. After Android 16 delivers his final appeal, Cell crushes the head. That destruction—not an act by Satan—becomes the immediate trigger that breaks Gohan's emotional restraint.
