The first six months were intended to teach Gohan self-reliance and the ability to survive. The following six months were reserved for serious combat training with Piccolo. Rather than simply abandoning Gohan, Piccolo had designed a year-long, two-stage program.

Piccolo watched from far enough away to avoid interfering with Gohan's growing independence, and he left apples when the boy was hungry. He did not remove every danger; instead, he guarded against a fatal outcome while allowing Gohan to learn how to survive.

The full moon triggered Gohan's Great Ape transformation. Piccolo destroyed the moon to halt the rampage and cut off Gohan's tail to prevent it from happening again. This was distinct from the surge in fighting power caused by Gohan's anger during the battle with Raditz.

A suspicious Chi-Chi visited Kame House with the Ox-King and learned what had happened to Goku and Gohan from Master Roshi. Krillin had been assigned to deliver the news, but he was not the person who ultimately explained it.

Tien chose to train under Kami together with Chiaotzu. King Kai, whom Goku was trying to reach, lived in the Other World, so the Earth-based fighters trained in a different place.

The chance to rest while riding caused Goku to fall asleep, and he fell from Snake Way. He was not attacked; relying on the ride allowed his attention to lapse.

After climbing a mountain and looking around, Gohan understood that he was on an island. He therefore built a raft and attempted to escape by sea instead of continuing on foot. His observation led him to change his means of travel.

The children had lost their parents and refused to be taken into an orphanage, so they lived in ruins under Pigero's leadership. Like Gohan, they were children separated from adults, but unlike him, they were not there to train.

After his tail regrew, Gohan saw an image of the moon and once again transformed into a Great Ape. This showed that cutting off his tail had not been a permanent solution.

On Earth, Gohan's restored tail led him to transform into a Great Ape again. In the Other World, Goku finally reached the end of Snake Way. King Kai's tests and Goku's mastery of techniques such as the Kaio-ken belong to the next part of the story.
