Dragon Ball Z begins five years after the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Goku is living in the mountains with Chi-Chi and their son, Gohan. Gohan is not Goku's younger brother; he is the son whom Goku introduces to his friends at this point.

Raditz's Scouter detected and measured the Power Levels around him. He followed a strong signal thinking it might be Kakarot, only to find Piccolo first. A Dragon Radar is a separate device used to locate Dragon Balls.

Raditz was Goku's biological older brother, and Kakarot was Goku's Saiyan name. The revelation also established that Goku was a Saiyan rather than an Earthling. Kakarot was neither Raditz's alternate name nor a warrior rank.

Raditz demanded that Goku kill 100 Earthlings, show him their bodies, and take part in the invasion. This was not a tournament or a search for the Dragon Balls, but a cruel test meant to prove that Goku had abandoned his attachment to Earth.

Raditz had kidnapped Gohan and posed a common threat that neither Goku nor Piccolo could defeat alone. They had not permanently reconciled; they temporarily placed the rescue and the defense of Earth above their rivalry.

The Special Beam Cannon offered exceptional piercing power but required Piccolo to spend time concentrating Ki at his forehead. Goku kept Raditz engaged and created time for Piccolo to prepare. It was neither a fusion of their Ki nor a sealing technique like the Mafu-ba.

With his tail held, Raditz could not move, so he pretended that he would change if Goku spared him. Goku believed the plea and released him, allowing Raditz to attack again. The reversal came from trusting a lie, not from insufficient strength in Goku's grip.

Enraged by his father's danger, Gohan broke out of the spacecraft and struck Raditz with a powerful headfirst tackle. This was not the result of learning a technique; his latent power briefly surfaced in response to intense emotion and shifted the battle.

Goku locked Raditz in a hold from behind and continued restraining him. Piccolo fired the Special Beam Cannon through both of them, killing Raditz and Goku. Goku did not simply fail to escape the blast; he chose to sacrifice himself to create the condition needed for a certain hit.

The deceased Goku received King Yemma's permission to travel the million-kilometer Snake Way toward King Kai. On Earth, Piccolo recognized Gohan's latent power and took him away to train for the coming invasion. Their preparations ran in parallel in the Other World and on Earth, under different teachers.
