Vegeta believed that accepting help would diminish his victory, so he refused assistance from Trunks and Piccolo and faced Android 18 alone. Their early exchanges appeared nearly even, but this was not a coordinated strategy; it was a choice driven by Vegeta's pride.

Trunks tried to rescue Vegeta from Android 18, and Piccolo's group also joined the battle. Android 17 then supported Android 18 and easily defeated those intervening fighters. Android 18 was the one who finished defeating Vegeta, so the two Androids' roles should not be reversed.

To acquire enough power to oppose the Androids, Piccolo went to the Lookout to reunite with Kami, with whom he had once been a single being. This was not simply another training session, but a major decision that would change the relationship between their identities and powers.

Krillin and Trunks arrived at Goku's home before the Androids and transported the still-unconscious Goku to Kame House by aircraft. Goku was in no condition to use Instant Transmission himself, and they did not send him to the future or the Lookout. Their action removed a vulnerable patient from the enemy's immediate path.

Because time travel created diverging worlds, victory in the present would not automatically rewrite the events of the future Trunks left behind. Future Bulma nevertheless built the time machine believing that at least another peaceful world could be created. This does not mean that the present-day struggle was pointless.

The old machine had arrived in the present one year earlier than Trunks's time machine. An ominous eggshell lay inside it, and the shed skin of a strange creature was found nearby. Together, the two clues suggested that its passenger had left the machine in a form unlike an ordinary human traveler.

The people of Ginger Town, near the time machine discovery site, mysteriously disappeared, and Kami saw the monster attacking the town from the Lookout. Recognizing a separate and grave danger beyond Androids 17 and 18, he accepted reunion with Piccolo. The reunited Piccolo immediately headed to the town.

Cell's energy resembled that of Goku and Frieza, and he used Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon before taking the stance for Goku's Kamehameha. Unlike Androids 17 and 18, who emitted no detectable ki, Cell combined energy and techniques associated with several different fighters, deepening the mystery of his identity.

Piccolo was not completely helpless. He used his weakened appearance to make Cell lower his guard. After Cell presented his history as information for a dying opponent, Piccolo revealed that he had been gathering intelligence and regenerated his left arm, turning a disadvantage into an opportunity to learn about the enemy.

Cell was still in an immature state and judged that defeating Piccolo, Krillin, and Trunks together would be difficult. Rather than continue the battle, he escaped while suppressing his ki, preventing the fighters from tracking him through energy sensing. He did not use Instant Transmission or a time machine.
