On her way home from shopping, Chi-Chi had a difficult trip along the mountain road, including an encounter with a wild boar, and then saw a cheerful couple traveling in an air car. Wanting more convenient transportation for her family, she demanded that Goku get a license, with Piccolo joining him at driving school. This was not training to pursue the Androids.

Androids 19 and 20 did not emit ki like living fighters, so Goku and the others could not locate them through their usual energy sensing. They therefore had to search the broad urban area with their eyes, and Yamcha eventually found the pair. The issue was not merely that the Androids' power was too faint to sense easily.

The Androids had already attacked Yamcha and destroyed part of the town. Goku moved the fight not to escape, but to protect the city and its residents from the damage that a battle between powerful opponents would cause. He remained committed to fighting while limiting the danger to bystanders.

Goku transformed successfully and was stronger than Android 19 early on. Nevertheless, Piccolo recognized that Super Saiyan Goku's power was below its previous level, and the fight steadily began to reverse. That observation signaled a deeper problem rather than ordinary fatigue from the battle.

Goku was suffering from the heart virus that Trunks had warned him about, and a Senzu Bean could not cure that illness as it could ordinary wounds or exhaustion. The bean's quality and Goku's Super Saiyan form were not the cause. Super Saiyan Vegeta then arrived to rescue Goku from the crisis.

Vegeta overwhelmed and ultimately destroyed Android 19. Android 20, realizing that he could not defeat Vegeta in his current state, fled. His retreat was tactical: he intended to absorb energy from Piccolo and the others, become stronger, and then defeat Vegeta.

Because Android 20 emitted no ki, the fighters could not sense him approaching while he hid among the rocks. He turned the same limitation that had hindered their search into an advantage for his ambush, seizing Piccolo and absorbing his energy. Gohan saw what was happening and intervened.

Bulma recognized from Android 20's appearance that he was Dr. Gero, the creator of the Androids. Moreover, because the two Androids before them did not match the threat Trunks knew, the group learned that other Androids existed. They now had to stop Gero before he could activate them in his laboratory.

Vegeta wanted Androids 17 and 18 awakened so that he could test his strength against them, while Trunks, knowing the future threat they posed, tried to stop their activation. During the search, Gero reached the laboratory first and activated the pair, fulfilling Trunks's fear.

Androids 17 and 18 destroyed their creator, Dr. Gero, when he tried to control them. They then awakened Android 16, whom Gero had forbidden them to activate. Rather than prioritize a fight with the warriors at the laboratory, the three set out for Goku's home with Goku as their target.
