The IT Passport is a national exam that certifies the basic knowledge needed by everyone who uses IT, whether you are working or still studying. It covers three areas evenly: business, IT management and IT technology. Start with the four-choice questions and see where you stand.

It is one of the Information Technology Engineers Examinations accredited by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and it is the entry-level national qualification in IT. No programming experience is required: questions come from business, security and everyday IT common sense, so anyone can take it whatever their background or job.
Format and how often it is held
It uses a CBT format (answered on a computer) available on a rolling basis at venues across Japan, so you can book almost any day that suits you. There are 100 four-choice questions over 120 minutes. The pass mark is generally a total of 600 or more out of 1000, with questions spread evenly across the strategy, management and technology areas.
What passing gets you
It proves you understand IT fundamentals systematically, which is worth showing when job hunting, changing careers or being evaluated at work. As a shared vocabulary for the digital era it helps in non-engineering roles too — sales, planning, administration — and it is a stepping stone to higher qualifications such as the Fundamental Information Technology Engineer Examination (FE).
How to prepare
The syllabus is broad, but the recurring themes are well established, so working through past questions is the most effective approach.
