The Walls, which rise more than fifty meters, protect humanity from the Titans outside. Eren, however, longs to see the world beyond them and regards the Survey Corps as heroes for risking their lives outside. His ambition is not to remain safely in the interior with the Military Police.

Unable to save his mother and confronted with his own powerlessness, Eren's hatred of the Titans deepens into a vow to eradicate every last one. Rather than abandoning his interest in the outside world for the safety of the Military Police, this resolve drives his later training and battles.

Eren initially struggles with the balance exercise that precedes training in vertical maneuvering. A cadet judged unfit for military service may instead become a producer in the settlements, while top-ranking graduates gain the opportunity to join the Military Police in the interior. His initial failure and the privileged career route are separate parts of the system.

Eren closes in on the nape, a Titan's weak point, but the Colossal Titan emits a large volume of steam and disappears from view. This is not a failed strike against armored skin, nor does Eren choose the wrong part of the body.

Eren leaps into the Titan's mouth and pushes the endangered Armin back outside, but he is swallowed instead. Mikasa does not rescue both of them at once. The incident is also an essential premise for understanding the identity of the Titan that appears later.

The cadets need gas to retreat, but they cannot reach it until the Titans around headquarters are removed. Armin proposes drawing the mysterious Titan—which saved Mikasa and attacks other Titans—to the building so the enemies fight one another. Destroying the supply depot would defeat the purpose of reaching it.

The person inside is Eren, whom Armin believed had been swallowed. Fear that a Titan may be masquerading as a human leads Kitz and the Garrison to aim their weapons at Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. Saving soldiers is not enough for them to accept Eren immediately as an ally.

At the instant the shell lands, Eren partially transforms, using the upper body and skeleton of a Titan as a shield for Mikasa and Armin. He does not complete a full transformation and counterattack the Garrison; his power is used defensively.

Pixis's plan is for Eren in Titan form to carry a boulder and plug the hole in Trost's breached gate. Instead, Eren swings at Mikasa and then punches himself in the face, leaving his Titan body unable to move. The question distinguishes the operation's objective from its failure at the outset.

Armin speaks to the person inside the Titan and reminds Eren of his purpose. As the awakened Eren carries the boulder, Ian and the elite soldiers draw the surrounding Titans toward themselves to keep his path open. Their costly support allows Eren to seal the breached gate.
