Super Trunks gained tremendous power, but his enlarged muscles slowed his movements so much that he could not keep up with Cell. Effective combat requires enough speed to land an attack, not merely a high power level. The tradeoff in the form's attributes—not a lack of power—caused his failure.

Rather than simply kill Trunks, Cell proposed a tournament so that he could enjoy the ultimate battle. It was neither a peace proposal from Earth's defenders nor a conventional competition for a prize; Cell created it to draw out powerful opponents for his own enjoyment.

Cell told Trunks that the tournament would take place in ten days and built the arena himself in an empty wasteland. After hearing about the event, Android 16 wished to participate and arranged to have his body repaired at Capsule Corporation. The arena and the repair site were different places.

Cell announced that he would kill every human if none of the challengers could defeat him. This was not a contest in which only the entrants accepted the risk: humanity's survival depended on the outcome, which is why the broadcast sent the world into panic.

To improve their chances in the Cell Games, Vegeta and Trunks decided to enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber again after Goku and Gohan came out. The four Saiyans were not planning to train there together; the pairs used the chamber in sequence.

Goku and Gohan did not leave because they had exhausted every available day. Goku chose not to enter again, and they returned to their family and spent time resting and fishing. This did not mean they had withdrawn from the Cell Games; it was their choice of how to prepare for the battle.

Bourbon exploited fear of Cell and forced the villagers to work on a purported shelter dome. Cell himself had not ordered the project. The hired assassin Mercenary Tao fled after learning that Gohan was Goku's son, and Gohan brought Bourbon's scheme to an end.

Time passes much faster inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber than in the outside world, so Gohan aged to eleven during his training despite only a short period passing on Earth. A full outside year had not passed, and Shenron had not changed Gohan's age.

Goku did not intend to use the Dragon Balls to erase Cell directly. He wanted a way to revive the people Cell had killed. With King Kai's help he located New Namek, and he brought back Dende—recommended by the Grand Elder—to become Earth's new Guardian and restore the Dragon Balls.

After Dende restored the Dragon Balls, Goku searched for them and gathered all seven. They did not automatically assemble at the Lookout the moment they were restored. The restoration in Episode 173 and the completed collection in Episode 174 were separate stages of the plan.
