Tien and Chiaotzu entered as Master Shen's students in the Crane School. Goku and Krillin trained under Master Roshi, while Yamcha stood with the Kame School side at this tournament. Jackie Chun was Master Roshi in disguise, and neither Man-Wolf nor Pamput belonged to the two schools.

After knocking Yamcha unconscious and effectively deciding the match, Tien attacked again and broke his leg. The extra attack was not needed to win. It showed how ruthlessly Tien followed Master Shen's teachings early in the tournament and contrasts with the choice he later makes in the final.

Jackie used Krillin's round head as a stand-in for the moon and hypnotized Man-Wolf, restoring his human form. He did not restore the actual moon or cut off a tail. The scene shows Jackie making amends after the match for a problem he had created at the previous tournament.

Krillin realized that Chiaotzu's psychic attack depended on keeping his palms aimed at the target. The arithmetic question prompted Chiaotzu to count on his fingers, interrupting that hand position and stopping the stomach pain. The tactic worked because Krillin exploited an observed limitation, not because arithmetic itself determined the match.

Jackie recognized Tien's ability and concluded that the new generation had grown strong enough, so he voluntarily stepped out of bounds. Tien did not knock him from the ring. Jackie had served as a barrier against youthful overconfidence at the 21st tournament; this time, as a teacher, he chose to step aside.

Goku had trained his tail during the previous three years and overcome the weakness that once made him lose his strength when it was grabbed. Krillin's plan would have worked against the younger Goku, but it relied on the weakness remaining unchanged. The moment shows growth beyond simply increasing the power of Goku's attacks.

Tien's Four Witches Technique grows two additional arms from his back, giving him four actual arms. Goku's Eight-Handed Technique rapidly moves his arms so that they appear to number eight. Both support attacks with multiple arms, but one transforms the body while the other relies on speed.

Tien turned away from Master Shen's corrupt teachings and the goal of avenging Mercenary Tao, choosing instead to face Goku fairly as an independent martial artist. He neither joined the Kame School nor handed Goku the victory. His goal changed from hurting opponents to testing himself honestly against a powerful rival.

The Tri-Beam obliterated the entire ring. Because Goku heeded the warning and avoided a direct hit, the match changed into an airborne contest in which the first fighter to touch the ground would lose by ring-out. Rather than hitting Goku with the technique, Tien created conditions that favored his ability to fly.

Goku touched the ground first and therefore lost by ring-out, making Tien the champion of the 22nd tournament. The Tri-Beam did not strike Goku directly, and the match did not end by surrender or a ten-count. After an evenly matched battle, the tiny difference in their landing order decided the result.
