The dress was a keepsake worn by Chi-Chi's late mother. Chi-Chi wanted to wear her mother's dress when she married Goku. It was neither a new outfit made by Bulma nor a tournament prize, which is why preserving it inside the castle mattered so much.

The Ox-King went back for the wedding dress that had belonged to Chi-Chi's mother. He became trapped in the castle by the flames, prompting Goku and the others to seek a way to extinguish the blaze and rescue him. He was not pursuing an enemy or a Dragon Ball.

They asked Fortuneteller Baba for help and followed an octagonal clue from her vision. It led them to Octagon Village, Oolong's hometown. Since the missing object was not a Dragon Ball, they relied on divination rather than Bulma's radar.

The book said that a Fire-Eating Bird's feather was needed to make the Bansho Fan. Goku and Chi-Chi therefore headed to Mount Kiwi in search of the bird. They began by seeking a feather, not an egg, which matters when comparing the book's directions with what the scholar told them there.

The scholar said that the Fire-Eating Birds had died out and that only eggs remained. Those eggs were also the target of Pilaf's gang. The scholar did not have a supply of the feathers Goku and Chi-Chi had expected, so their search had to move toward another approach.

They sought special snow capable of freezing even fire, but a violent blizzard made the mountain nearly impossible to approach. The plan was not to transport a large amount of ordinary snow; this was a distinct alternative involving snow with an extraordinary property.

Chi-Chi found the Bansho Fan while helping Old Lady Hakkake with household tasks. The breakthrough came not from Goku's fighting strength or dangerous exploration, but from Chi-Chi's ordinary work during her bridal training.

The fan was not broken or counterfeit. The castle was burning with special fire that flowed from the Furnace of Eight Divisions on Mount Five Elements. Repeating an ordinary extinguishing attempt could not solve the underlying problem, so Goku and Chi-Chi traveled to the source.

Annin, also known as the Supreme Elder, managed the Furnace of Eight Divisions. Goku also encountered his adoptive grandfather, Grandpa Gohan, there. Gohan was deeply important to Goku, but he was not the keeper of the furnace, so the two roles must be distinguished.

The goal was not to stop the furnace's essential function, but to remove the cause of the flames reaching Fire Mountain. Following Annin's instructions, Goku entered the burning furnace and sealed the leak while keeping its fire alive. The plan balanced a local rescue with the furnace's role in the wider world.
