Luffy showed Coby the courage to pursue his own dream rather than remain a servant too afraid to oppose Alvida. Luffy then defeated Alvida and freed Coby from her control. Nami was stealing treasure during the same confusion, but she neither taught Coby navigation nor joined Luffy at this point.

After hearing Zoro's reputation, Luffy traveled to Shells Town to judge for himself whether Zoro was someone he wanted in his crew. His goal was not to claim a bounty, and he had not decided solely from rumors that Zoro would definitely join him.

Zoro recognized Luffy's resolve and became his first crewmate. Coby's own dream was to join the Marines, so Luffy staged a confrontation that made it appear their connection had been severed, allowing Coby to remain. Coby struck Luffy to support that separation, not because he had truly become Luffy's enemy.

Luffy ate the Gum-Gum Fruit in Foosha Village and became a rubber human. Shanks later entrusted his precious straw hat to Luffy together with a promise that Luffy would return it after becoming a great pirate. The origin of Luffy's ability and the origin of the hat were separate events.

Nami hated pirates and tried to use Luffy by turning him over to Buggy, but Buggy then tested her by ordering her to fire a special Buggy Ball at Luffy. Nami's own goal of stealing the map was distinct from the cannon attack Buggy tried to force her to carry out.

Chouchou remained at the pet food shop that his late owner had operated. His loyalty to the shop, separate from his accidental swallowing of the cage key, gives meaning to his confrontation with Mohji. He was not guarding the store as a watchdog for the Buggy Pirates.

Luffy did not strike Boodle as an enemy. He knocked him out to stop him from throwing his life away against an opponent he could not defeat. Luffy then confronted Buggy himself and reflected the special Buggy Ball with Gum-Gum Balloon, showing that he was protecting the town rather than surrendering its mayor.

Buggy ate the Chop-Chop Fruit, which allows him to separate his body. He detached his upper body and moved through the air to attack Nami as she tried to take his treasure. The Gum-Gum Fruit belongs to Luffy, while the Smooth-Smooth Fruit is associated with Alvida later in the story.

Usopp's father is Yasopp, a member of Shanks's pirate crew. Because Luffy had known Yasopp during his childhood, he recognized the connection to Usopp. Shanks himself was not Usopp's father; the link came through one of Shanks's crewmates.

Klahadore and Jango were discussing a plan to assassinate Kaya. Usopp's everyday adventure stories were benevolent inventions meant to lift Kaya's spirits, whereas the conspiracy he overheard was a genuine threat. The contrast between those two kinds of 'stories' drives the turning point in Episode 10.
