Rapa Nui cannot accept the reality that 50 years have passed outside the mist. In addition to the physical challenge of escaping the maze, he must confront the psychological shock that time has moved on for his friends and homeland. Abandoning the treasure is not the central conflict.

Cricket is a descendant of Mont Blanc Noland, the protagonist of Noland the Liar. The crew visits him for information about Sky Island after learning that talk of his dream caused him to be driven from town. Cricket is not Noland himself surviving from the period of the tale; he inherits Noland's family line.

The South Bird's habit of always facing south can guide the crew toward the southern sea where the Knock Up Stream will appear. The bird does not carry the ship into the sky; it supports the directional part of a navigation plan that must reach a time-limited current.

Bellamy uses the power of the Spring-Spring Fruit to defeat Cricket and the Saruyama Alliance and steal their gold. The enormous insects obstruct the Straw Hats' search in the forest, but they do not defeat the alliance. Neither the South Bird nor the Log Pose is the stolen item.
